Artist appraisal
Bonnie Meltzer 'Bequest' (2006)
The triptych of wood panels is each shaped like workers overalls. They are approximately 90 cm high and 40 cm wide. Each overall is completed with
collage digital imagery, wire, acrylics and recycled objects.
The first panel shows soft earthy colours and a contrasting blue tone. The image shows rain clouds and sun, signifying reliance on the weather
for existence. The panel shows a crop growing and fish in the creek or river. From the farmhouse centre left, a road leads to the right through the second
panel and over the third panel.
The second panel shows a bright happy family and farm scenes and farm house. All the farm scenes in this panel depict harvesting, handling animals and being a part of a family. This panel is multi-coloured and all the people in the images in this panel appear to be happy and content.
The final panel shows more bright colours with many houses, a post box and a shopper with a trolley. The houses imply suburbia as there is more of them close together and they appear to be similar. There is a post-box signifying distance perhaps and the same colours are present.
The artwork explores farming in America and the struggles the family may face. It shows the journey from the crop on the left to the purchaser on the right. The art piece implies that whilst the farmers and their families may be happy existing on the farm, it may not be a viable option in the future as all the houses have a shoe implying moving away. There is an organic earthy feel to the piece as it is very textured and raw. This is achieved by using wood panels and found objects along with the images and acrylics to create many textures. 'Bequest' is a greenart contemporary piece that explores modern day life for a small American farming family. This work is one of twelve commissioned by Maryhill Museum, Goldendale, Washington. Twelve artists were each paired with a farm to create an artwork about sustainability on the farm.
