Pablo Picasso seven colour linocut (1962)
This art piece is of a framed table with a piece of watermelon and flowers on it, a light above the table as if suspended by a cable from a ceiling takes up the top middle section of this print. The colours are very bold and deep and the overall image appears to be dark. The light above the table has squiggled lines making the light appear bright and switched on highlighting the objects on the table.
This work has been contrasted by the colour choice within the linocut. This holds the viewers gaze to move from the base of the image to the top. The repeated pattern around the linocut provides an informal frame around the whole image. The lines are non linear and are sharp around the image softening within the center of the linocut.
Pablo Picasso's linocut has been created with informal balance where the top of the work is balanced with the bottom although the objects are not the same.
Within the linocut print the proportions of the objects within the linocut are oversized allowing the objects within the work to combine harmoniously, and creating an effective stand out piece.
The shapes of the objects within the linocut are both geometric (the water melon, light) and free form shapes (the possible flowers beside the watermelon). The negative space around the objects allows the positive space to pop off the page.
This linocut has been created using seven colours being imprinted individually on seven separate tiles. This technique Pablo Picasso was known for, the linocut offered a softer imprint than timber or stone/slate. Pablo Picasso was an innovative artist using gouges he would cut out the area he wished to create the image and leave absent the areas around the image, the relief area would be inked or painted and pressed onto paper creating a mirrored image, if there was more than one colour in his work he would create a tile to correspond with the colour he wished to imprint on his art, Pablo Picasso worked this way from the beginning of his innovation of linocut print art since 1958.
